Death of Col. George Bower.

We are pained to have to record the death of this aged and worthy citizen. We learn that he was drowned in Yadkin river near Wilkesborough,on Monday the 7th inst., while attempting to ford the stream in his carriage. He was alone in his carriage, on his way from his residence in Jefferson to Wilkesborough. The negro boy who was driving him made his escape; and the horses, having washed down the stream, were taken out alive on Tuesday morning. His body had not been found when our informant left. Col. B. had the misfortune to have one of his legs broken some time since, and it is more than probable that but for his lameness he would have made his escape from the stream, for though far advanced in years, he was still strong and athletic.
Col. Bower took his seat in the Legislature of this State as early as 1812, and he has been frequently in the public service since that period. We suppose he was at least 70 years of age. He leaves a wife, but no children. He was a striking specimen of the honest, straightforward, old time public men of the State, who are rapidly passing away. peace to his ashes!
Since the above was written we have received a letter from a friend at Jefferson, in which he says--
"I write to announce the death of your old friend, Col. George Bower. He started to Raleigh on Monday last, the 7th, and reaching the Yadkin river near Wilkesborough, about dark, he attempted to ford it, and the water being higher than he expected, his carriage and horses were washed down the stream and he was drowned. Diligent search was made for his body until the morning of the 10th, when it was found, about a mile below where he was drowned. He was seventy four years of age. he was one of our most energetic, industrious and useful citizens. He was a member of the church, and maintained as such a consistent and upright course."
