Hi, not sure if this would help you, but, this is the information my Uncle Peter obtained from Records when he went to Italy in 1972. If you are able to get to Italy, or have someone who can translate a letter for you, the Historical Neopolitan Society holds Geneologica records that may be helpful to you as well. The Bove Family actually originates back to 340 b.c. in the Naples area. Prior to that, I am not sure. I had never considered to French possibility, but as you read through other messages in this forum, it may be possible that they migrated to Italy around this time, as so many others had. From what I have been able to obtain over the internet, this area was populated much earlier in the "quaternary period". The people were classified as having a "dolichocephalic cranium" and were from the Cham Family branch (origin unknown). The population had migrated from the north and by Sea. Such as: the Aryans, Italiots, Gauls & Liguarians [of Celtic origin], Latins & Umbrians of Adige/Adda [1200 - 800 b.c.], Samnites [400 b.c.?], Sabinnes, Entruscans [natives of Asia Minor, 600 b.c.], The Greeks [Messapico-Iapygian 1200-800 b.c.], Ageans, Trojans, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Tyrrhenians from Lydia, Romans, Parmenides (515 b.c.), Plebians (494 b.c.), etc. There are too many tribal names to count. I would really like to know which clan, or race we originated from, but the only accounts made in ancient antiquity were written on Papyrus or stone tablets and are not so accurate. There are many books on the subject, however, I just haven't gotten around to purchasing any of them yet. So far, my search has involved my Uncle's documents and searches over the internet. Apparently, according to my Uncle's document, he was able to determine that there were two original branches of the Bove's. One with the names: Luis, Benedittine, Enrico, Donadio, Leone, Sergio and Anthony. The other branch had the names: Matteo, Pietro, Jacob, Giovanni, Orse, Bartolomeo, Ciccio, and Battista. I think these were first names, but not sure (my family came from Matteo). He also determined that the family migrated from a hill called Torrelle or Toro [which is were the bull on the Bove crest originates] in Amalfi--Which was a Roman settlement around 340 b.c. And, I believe they came from Rome prior to Amalfi. After Torelle, they settled into the hills that the Romans called the Scala because they sloped considerably (to protect themselves from invasions and bandits) and built heavily fortified forts (and had many soldiers - The Bove League) and many sumptuous palaces surrounded by beatiful villas and gardens. They named/founded this town called Ravenna (which became a very important Roman Port. Research the "Republic of Amalfatani", who wrote maritime and commercial trade laws on the "Amalfian Tables") along with the Muscettelo, Rufolo (Royalty) and Rogedeo (sp?) families, which were the best(most wealthy)names of "Costiera Amalfitana [coast of Amalfi, south of Naples]". If you visit Ravenna, the postcards display the names of the family crests of these founders, including Bove. Over the past thousand years, my family populated Bintondo, Fondi, Gerace, Venafro, Graeta, Bari, Calvi, Zecca di Brindisi, Nicosia, Tramonti, Larino, Capua, etc. Who knows we may be related! My families branch has several royalty connections too, but at this time all of the noble holdings have been abolished. Good luck with your search, hope this info helped. If you are interested, I have the family crest (with my families additions, for their acheivements) as well as ancient maps of the area that I obtained from the world book online.
