Bridget, I think the journal that Russell was talking about is "The Journal of Jean Laffite - The Privateer-Patriot's Own Story". This was printed by Dogwood Press, HC 53 Box 345, Hemphill, Texas 75948, 409-579-2184. ISBN 0-9646846-0-8. I have a copy of a third printing done in 1994. I purchased mine from Amazon.com. sometime last year. There is a statement on the second page that this publication is a facsimile of the Journal as published by the Jean's great grandson, John A. Laffite, in 1958, through Vantage Press. It also states that Jean Laffite was reported as being dead in the 1820's, but suppossedly the journal was written in the 1850's; also that the original maunscript of the Journal was purchased by Governor Price Daniel of Texas and as of 1994 was on display at the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center at Liberty, Texas. The original journal is in French. This little book is suppossed to be a translation of that journal. It does not state who did the translation. I found this to be very interesting reading, but I also wondered how much of it was true or if it's authentic. Have you read it since you posted that message last year. Since you were a descendant of Jean Laffite, I would like your opinion on this. I am a descendant of the Boutte's of Louisiana and have of course read a great deal about your famous relative and perhaps mine if the folklore about Jean Laffite really being a Boutte or vise versa is ever proven. I doubt that it will be, but they keep trying. I also corresponded with a distant relative of my husband two years ago about a family genealogy he had done. This particular person lives in San Antonio, Texas and is quite a historian. He has his own website and when I was browsing that site, I noticed that there was mention of this same original journal as being one of the "RED NUMBERED MISCELLANEIOUS FOLDERS LOCATED IN THE SPANISH ARCHIVES OF THE BEXAR COUNTY COURTHOUSE". This person compiled and published and informal catalogue of these folders in 1991. In this catalogue it is listed as " No. 169. Journal of Jean Laffite (243 pages, handwritten in French)." I do not know if this is the original journal that was on display at the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center at Liberty, Texas when the Dogwood Press published the facsimile in 1994. Perhaps it's permanent home is the Spanish Archives of the Bexar County Courthouse in San Antonio, Texas and it was just "visiting" that library in 1994. I've given you this additional information to help you in case you want to search further, or perhaps view the original journal. I have family in San Antonio and the next time I visit, I would like to see if it's there and view it myself. Let me know if you now know of this journal and what you think of it. If you want that website, let me know and I will go back through my records to find it for you. Carol Schmidt Notify Administrator about this message?
