MARIA BURSAW,19, with daughter MAUD, 9 mos., was living with FRANKLIN and LYDIA THOMPSON in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the time of the federal census of 1870. I am trying to establish the name and parentage of Maria's husband, ______ BURSAW. He is said to have died of the "quick consumption" (Tuberculosis). MARIA BURSAW'S maiden name was Van Emburgh or Van Imburgh. In the federal census of 1860 she is listed
as MONICA [this may be a transcription error for "Maria"]VAN IMBURGH [this may be another transcription error for "Van Emburgh] and was living with FRANKLIN and LYDIA THOMPSON in DePere, Wisconsin. Franklin Thompson was her stepfather, Lydia Putnam Van Emburgh Thompson her mother. Maria was born in Pugwash, Nova Scotia. Her father, John Van Emburgh was a shipbuilder and sea captain. Apparently he died sometime in the 1850s. Maria's mother remarried and moved to DePere, Wisconsin. Since I don't know when the Thompson's relocated from DePere to Grand Rapids, it is hard to guess whether Maria married ______ BURSAW in Michigan or Wisconsin. Maria's daughter Maud was nine months old in 1870, so that would put the probabilities a little in favor of Michigan but I note that the Bourassa family who became BURSAW were in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin (not too far from DePere) in the 1840s.
Any information on the identity of Maria's BURSAW husband would be much appreciated. [Maria's daughter, Maud, married WALTER H. MCMILLAN and was in Columbia, Brown County, South Dakota in the late 1880s and 1890s].
