When talking about the birthplace and locations of Joseph Boultinghouse and his children, be careful about the timeframe, because in 1775 Virginia claimed territory that now is known to be a section of southwestern Pennsylvania. The problem was that there had been no survey done to establish the southern boundary of PA that far west. As a result, Joseph appears in Virginia and PA records at the same time but didn't move! In fact, the capital of a county in Virginia had to be moved south because it was found to be in PA when the survey was done. It's likely that Daniel was born in what we now call PA, but at the time they thought they were in Virginia. The subsequent travels of Joseph and his son Daniel appear quite complicated until you realize that they would have travelled on the Ohio River to reach Ohio and Indiana, so references to Kentucky just mean that they spent some time on the left bank of the river. I'm not so sure about the references to Tennessee and New York; I'm more suspicious of them. Joseph was discharged at Ft. Pitt in 1788 and in 1788 won a court award of 15 shillings 222 pounds of tobacco and 25 shillings cost and the sheriff ordered the lands of ___ attached. Joseph (possibly his son; I don't know the date) apparently was at Pickett Fort in West Virginia, and he was listed as a member of the militia of Zackquil Morgan in April 1775. In 1770 (1790?) Joseph helped organize Great Bethel Baptist Church at Fayette County, PA. Joseph seemed to be a man of some influence; I read a military report on a meeting at his home in which quite a few officers were present. The inference I took was that he had a large home and was someone with whom the military people felt comfortable having a strategy meeting. I forget where I read it; it may have been on a film at the David Library of the Revolution at Washington Crossing PA. Generally Daniel's father was involved in the frontier and the militia for a considerable length of time so Daniel probably had experience through his family and as you say even if he didn't have formal prior training he could be a Captain based on that. If there wasn't much competition for the job be could have risen very quickly to that position. Alec Purdy Notify Administrator about this message?
