Hello, I was wondering how Daniel Boultinghouse Sr. got to be the Captain of a Company of Mounted Territorial Militia in Illinois during the later stages of the War of 1812. He was born in Virginia, lived in southwestern PA., then moved to what became Ohio and married once or twice there. What I was wondering is if he served in any Northwest territorial militia or was involved in any of the campaigns in the 1790's against the Natives of the Northwest Territory? Has anyone found any other military records for Daniel Boultinghouse Sr. that might indicate where he obtained his military experiences that enabled him to lead a militia company. The other idea is that he was just a tough, resourceful man and a leader in his local community and was, like many militia leaders in the 1700-1800's, choosen by the men who would be their leaders. Captain Boultinghouse's Company also included as First Lt., a John Graves. Was this Daniel's brother in law? (Daniel's second wife was Susannah Graves. They married in Scioto Co., OH. Some Graves in Scioto Co., OH. also sold land and property about the same time Daniel Boultinghouse was moving his family to southern Illinois.) You comments and idea are welcome.
