Bill,
Boldthaus; sounds good. We need to find a linguist who could comment on how it could change to Boultinghouse. The "house" part is easy. The "ou" is more difficult, as the English also use just "o". The "ou" usually comes from the need to imitate the French sound "eu" as in colour. It has been suggested that the name may have been Boeltenhaus, which is easier to see the oe changed to ou. I'd like to know what the "en" part means; are Boldt and Boldten an easy conversion, or not? In English names, sticking an "ing" in the middle isn't an easy thing to do. Changing from "en" to "ing" or the other way around is easy once it's there.
In the very little research I've done in England, I haven't seen the name. I haven't done any research on the continent. Your actually meeting the Austrian with the name is interesting....
