Name spelling variations not really changes

Hi Marcia, I know that this is an old message, yet I wonder if you ever found out that our ancestors (for the most part) could not read or write and did not care how their names were spelt. At PRDH they claim that this name had 5 variation of the spelling before 1800.

Standard name Variant Freq.
BOUILLET BOUILET 1
BOUILLET BOUILLET 84
BOUILLET BOUILLETTE 1
BOUILLET BOUILLIET 4
BOUILLET BOUILLOT 4

In that case, when doing genealogy PRDH uses the most common spelling. After 1800 as our ancestors moved to the USA there were even more spelling variations to all the surnames.
