Tamara,

Welcome to genealogy. I caught the "bug" a couple of years back and find it is a fascinating way to personalize history. Let me help you get a start. As mentioned in the follow-up from Renee-Marie Boudreau, most Boudreaus in North America are descended from Michel Boudrot. You have a rich heritage. Michel and his wife Michelle Aucoin left France about 1642 for Acadia, or what is now Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and parts of Maine. They settled in Port Royal (now Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia) and had 11 children, including 7 boys, all of whom had children -- lots of them. I am descended through my father's mother from Michel's son Claude. Claude in turn fathered 10 children by his first wife and 17 by his second wife (none by his third). Claude's brothers were almost as prolific. The result? I've heard there are well over 10,000 direct descendants of Michel and Michelle in North America. Name variations I know of are Boudrot, Boudreau, Boudreaux, and Boudreault.

A bit of history. There was a mass deportation of Acadians, in the thousands, by the British in 1755. There were a number of stated reasons, but in essence they wanted to populate Nova Scotia with people who would be loyal to the British Crown. Read the poem "Evangeline" by Longfellow if you get the chance - sad poem for a sad time. Acadians were dispersed to other North American colonies and Europe. Many fled to other parts of Canada. An ancestor of mine and his family were deported to New York and after a couple of years there moved to Quebec.

Enough already. See what happens when you get a genealogy buff started? I have to constantly stop myself from boring my family! Please consider this free advice. I made the mistake of not doing enough of this while my grandparents and even a great grandmother were alive. Talk to your mother and your grandfather to find out everything they know about their ancestors. The obvious details would be the names, dates and places of birth, marriages, and deaths. Your grandfather Boudreau should know this about his parents at least and possibly his grandparents. Once you have gone back as far as possible in this way you will have a much easier time finding a connection with others in this forum and using other reference material.

Feel free to ask me, or anyone else in the forum for advice. All of us can recommend web sites for example. If you look through old messages, you'll find a number of repeat responders. They'll all want to help, but you should try to have as much information as you can to help them/us help you.
