Bottomleys in SLaithwaite/Linthwaite and Holmfirth
Joseph BOTTOMLEY married Jane NEWTON in Almondbury WRY on 25th Oct 1827.He is described as "of this parish" and she as being from Huddersfield. In the 1851 census they are both described as being from Slaithwaite.Slaithwaite in the Colne valley had a chapel of ease belonging to Huddersfield parish but also used by Almondbury parish.Essentially the north side of the valley belonged to Huddersfield and the south to Almondbury so the two statements are not contradictory.Their first child, Mary, is also said in the census to have been born in Slaithwaite.
By 1851 they had the following children, dates of birth calculated from their ages in the census:
Mary, 1829; Martha, 1831; Newton, 1833; Eliza, 1835; Jane, 1837; Joseph, 1840; Thomas, 1844; Sophia, 1847 and John William, 1849.
The ages of the older children are consistent between 1841 and 1851 and Newton's age in the census agrees with his baptism on 16 Jun 1833 at Holmfirth.
The ages of Joseph and Jane are more problematic. In 1841 he is said to be 35 and she 25 which seems improbably given that her oldest daughter is then 12.In the next 10 years Joseph seems to have aged 15 years to become 50 whilst she only aged 5!
After the birth of Mary the family appear to have moved to Holmfirth where the remainder of the children were said to have been born. The two census locations are respectively "Bridge" and "Bridge Fold" in Wooldale township.
Joseph is described in '41 and '51 as plasterer and painter/plasterer respectively. In '51 Newton was also a plasterer; he can also be found in '81 in the same trade at Holme Banks, Holmbridge along with his sons, John and Joe, following the same trade.Mary and Martha were respectively a milliner and a straw bonnet maker in '51.
Jane is so far untraced but the only candidate I have for Joseph is the son of Benjamin and Martha BOTTOMLEY baptised in Slaithwaite on 17 Aug 1801 with the abode given as Cross, Linthwaite. This agrees with his age given in 1851.This is the only baptism I have for children of this couple in Almondbury parish.
