Don,
My grandfather, Earl Vern Bothwell, was a boxer at one time, but I never heard of him fighting in the garden. Howevefr, he did train at a gym in the Los Angeles area owned by Jim Corbitt. Fraid I don'rt know much about his career -- but there is an Illinois connection: His father was born in Wahiteside County to Jeremiah Bothwell and Sarah Bates. Jeremiah and Sarah divorced, he remarried Emily Buckingham and last I know about him was still in Whiteside Co. in the 1880s.
Any chance you might be related to him?
