Hi Marilyn -
I don't know anything for sure about your John B. Bothwell. I have a Jeremiah Bothwell, born about 1820, supposedly in Ireland, who appears in Whiteside Co, Illinois in the 1840s. Whiteside County is just downriver of Dubuque. Also appearing in Whiteside at the same time as Jeremiah were James and William Bothwell. James died, and his widow Ruth moved to Michigan. William and his wife Dinah moved to Dubuque. I haven't proved any connection between all these Bothwells yet (she says hopefully), but you might want to consider the possibility that your people might not be connected with the more well-documented Pennsylvania Bothwells.
We have reasons to suspect that Jeremiah may have come through Canada, so that's another thing to think about.
