I have followed a rather prominent group of Boswell's living in Southern England (Kent and Yorkshire) prior to the time our lines came to America. They show lineage that goes all the way back to William the Conquerers' time. Among them were a few who had been knighted and several that were officials in the Church. During the late 1500's and early 1600's a couple of the more prominent landowners among them died--leaving, as was typical, their landholdings and bulk of the inheritance to the the eldest son. Still, the younger sons got nice "pensions" and were educated, but, without land, left to go abroad.
Have not been able to make any direct link, and so far none of the names match up, but my understanding of the history of the time suggests that a story like the above may well be the most likely source of any Boswells that came to America in the early 1600's. Those from Scotland seem to have come during the 1700's.
