Looking to put the branches on a large Boswell family tree. Would like any and all records, history, photographs of Boswell descendants from Overton County Tennessee. Samuel Boswell came from VA to TN between 1800-1810 and died in 1850 in Overton County Tennessee. Four sons followed him to Tennessee: William, James, Samuel, and Andrew. William Boswell left TN ca.1860 and moved his family to AR. He was with his second wife Anne Copeland and their children. It is reported that he died in AR. James Boswell married Cynthia Honeycutt from Campbell County Tennessee east of Overton County but did return to Overton Co. Cynthia was his second wife (much younger) and they had children together. Cannot prove through records but believe that James died in Overton or Scott County. Samuel Boswell left Overton County TN and supposedly moved first to AL and then to IL where he died in 1847. Andrew Boswell remained in Tennessee and had three sons who married, lived and died in TN. The oldest was Richard Boswell b.VA and married Amanda Sisco. Next was Andrew Boswell b.TN and married Clarissa Cox. The youngest was Samuel Boswell. I have heard that Samuel married and had five children but cannot prove this. Also research shows he sired two children out of wedlock: Calvin Boswell and Margaret Missouri Boswell. The mother of the children was Elizabeth Hargis but in the 1870 and 1880 Overton County census she gives her name as Elizabeth Boswell. Cannot prove Samuel and Elizabeth were ever married. My line begins with James Samuel Boswell b.1841 and married to Emma Ledbetter b.1841. They married in Jan.1869 and raised seven children. Emma died in 1905 and is buried at Falling Springs, Allred TN along with four of their children. Sam remarried Netty Jones and lived at Monterey TN. They divorced and he married a third time in 1908 to Sarah Jernigan in Monterey. Sarah was thirty years younger than Sam and bore him a son in 1911, William J.R. Boswell. Sam ended up at the Veterans Home in Nashville in Jan 1922 and was discharged for fighting in Aug 1922. He returned to Livingston, Overton County and eventually landed at the County Home where he died on May 7, 1929. No record of his burial, and he was a Confederate veteran. Three of Sam and Emma's children married and had children. Lilly Belle Peak b.1870 and d.1895 had a son Harry Lee Peak. Rufus Whitney Boswell was my great grandfather. He was born 1880 in Overton County TN and died 1915 in same county. He was postmaster at Crawford TN 1907-1915 and was the bookkeeper for the Brier Hill Collieries, a coal mining operation. He married Ermine Ramsey in 1902. They had four children: Vera, Hellen, Mary, and Rufus Edward Boswell b.1908, my grandfather. Netty Jane Boswell b.1883 married 1st William Carmack when she was fourteen, and 2nd Robert Walthall. Netty committed suicide in 1919 by drinking a bottle of carbolic acid. She left Robert with three small children to raise. My wall is identifying the parents of my great, great-grandfather James Samuel Boswell. In court records and a Confederate Veteran pension application, James Samuel states he was born in Tennessee and both parents were born in Tennessee, but names were never mentioned. If I can grow the Boswell Family tree for Overton County Tennessee, perhaps I will find the branch with my James Samuel on the other side of the wall. I welcome all information that anyone can share about the Overton County Tennessee Boswells. I hope to find my answers and organize this information for future Boswell research. Thanks to all for reading my notes and thanks in advance for any information shared. Mike Boswell Livingston TN Notify Administrator about this message?
