Hi Virginia

Are you sure about your information? From FreeBDM the only Joseph Bostock I see that may have been born in Haslington is registered in the March Quarter 1857

Births Mar 1857 Bostock Joseph Nantwich 8a 295 The district of Nantwich includes Haslington. A birth certificate, which you can order online would confirm the parents.

I'm not sure about your census reference either. The census for Joseph born Haslington, appears to be this one

1861 Yorkshire Guisborough Ref RG9/3655 86/29
Child Street
John Bostock head mar 35 excavator born Cheshire Haslinton[sic]
Mary do wife mar 34 born Cheshire Sandback
Ralph do son 12 driver of horses Cheshire Haslinton
Peter do son 10 scholar do do
Joseph do son 4 do do do

The census you mentioned would seem to be this one
1861 Leicestershire Osgathorpe RG9/2269 58/8 and 9
Thomas Bostock head mar 38 Farmer 65 acres emp 1 boy & 8 men Leicestershire Breedon on the Hill
Jane Bostock wife mar 38 farmers wife do Denington park
Mary L E Bostock daur 10 scholar do Melbourne
Thomas Bostock son 8 scholar do do
Anne M Bostock daur 7 scholar do Breedon on the Hill
Ellen Bostock daur 6 scholar Leicestershire Breedon on the Hill
Joseph Bostock son 4 scholar do Osgathorpe
Jonathon Bostock son 2 scholar do Diseworth
Catherine Day governess U 27 governess do do
Elizabeth Foster servant U 24 house servant do Breedon on the Hill
Sarah Foster servant U 14 kitchen maid do do
Charles Thompson servant 14 garden boy do do

There is this birth in Leicestershire, Births Jun 1857 Bostock Joseph Shardlow 7b 343 - Shardlow includes Breedon on the Hill
Osgathorpe is in the district Ashby De La Zouch - they seem to have the children's birthplaces slightly mixed perhaps as Ellen's registration seems to be there.

If you can confirm which Joseph is your person, he should be able to be traced back through the earlier census records.

When did your Joseph leave England? I see the Haslington man in 1871, but not easily the man in Leicestershire.

Trish
