Perhaps the listings in the local city directories over the years will be helpful.

Sometimes a community begins to enlarge and sometimes the old street is merged into another for simplicity in the eyes of the city fathers.<g>

Another advantage in cementing history is if the homestead in the census shows the individual "owned" then you could look into the deeds and plat books as well for descriptive data on the land in question.

Sometimes there are very short streets/avenues that fall by the wayside when the designs of new commercial distinctions dictate the "new day" and the old go quietly into the night.
