Hello Debbie, Nice to be emailing, albeit in a public place. I do the full thing, a one name study of the Bostock family. We have a common origin which is that we all got the family name from a place called Bostock in the middle of Cheshire, mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1087. However, very few of us can trace the full 900 years back to then. In my case back to 1723 in Duffield, Derbs, and in your case it goes Thomas, born 13/10/1911, son of Thomas and Betsy. This Thomas can be seen in 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses and was registered July-Sept 1875 in Bolton, Lancs, the son of William and Martha. William was born in Bolton, and gave his age as 41 in 1881, 51 in 1891, and 60 in 1901. This certainly seems to make him the William registered in Bolton July-Sept 1839 (censuses were taken in April). His birth certificate would then show his parents, but I haven't gone for that yet. I would expect to have found the 1851 census entry for this William, as there are indexes for 1851. There was a William in Bolton aged 12, born in Bolton, living with his parents Joseph and Ann. It would seem reasonable to make the link EXCEPT that there was indeed another William registered in Bolton July-Sept 1837 (first year of registrations). Then again there would appear to be the single family of Bostocks in Bolton in 1851. Also it was quite common to overstate the children's ages especially if they were working as opposed to being at school. This William aged 12 was a factory piecer, so I am inclined to believe that he was really just 11, and was indeed your ggfather. As to the William registered July-Sept 1837, well there was also a William who died Apr-June 1839 in Bolton (no age on the indexes), but it fits that the two Williams were brothers, and the first died young as they so often did in those times. 2 birth certificates and 1 death cert would settle it, but I am inclined to believe it. Joseph was aged 38 in the 1851 census, and was also born in Bolton. There is one Parish Register entry which is close enough, Joseph baptised 14/8/1811 at Deane by Bolton, the son of William and Hannah. From there I can go no further. We don't know the age or the birth place of William. One thread that seems to link the genealogy is naming a daughter Esther. Giving the known children: William had Esther, William, John and Joseph (1811). Joseph had William, William (1839), Esther, Alexander and Henry. William (1839) had Margaret Ann, Esther, William (1868), Thomas (1875) and Joseph. William (1868) had Margaret Ann, Thomas and Esther Thomas (1875) had William (1900) Emily, Esther, Thomas (1911) and Nelly. Concerning this last family you also included a Robert. Did you mean that? Can you give any more on him, especially a birth year? I believe this should give you somethying to ponder on. Regards, Roland (Roland@Bostock.net) Notify Administrator about this message?
