Uskok / Senj origins of SMICIKLAS from Sopote, Zumberak?

My Great-Grandfather Ilija Smiciklas (b.1878) and his brother Marko Smiciklas (b. about 1875) are from the town of Sopote, in Zumberak, west of Zagreb.

I saw this post in the Bosnia/Herzegovina Genealogy Forum that lists the name Smiciklas as an Uskok surname.

My family is of Greek-Catholic faith background. Our traditions say that the Smiciklas' first settled in Zumberak around 1600-1630. This was apparently after escaping the Turks through Herzegovina, and taking a stand to protect the town of Senj.

Family tradition says that Smiciklas' were "privateers" or "pirates," that took to raiding merchant ship lanes along the Adriatic Sea out of both economic necessity and opposition to the ruling Austrian powers. The family was eventually forced to relocate to Zumberak, far from the coast to prevent further disruptions (estimated between 1600-1630).

The family tradition seems to be consistent with the historical information surrounding the Uskoks in the period around 1520 to 1630.

I am looking for ANY information that links the Smiciklas surname to the Uskoks, to Senj, or to Zumberak, prior to 1875.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you for taking time to respond.

Bob Smiciklas
