Names in Bosna were "chosen" much as were those in other parts of Europe... there are about 7 basic categories of surnames...
1) Patronymic, that is after a male given name
2) Occupational, some examples in the area in general are MLINAR (meaning miller), in Bosna DIZDAR is from Turkish for some sort of government or military official, HARAMIJA after a Turkish warrior, one of the most interesting amongst Croats is POTURICA which literally means "someone who converted to the Turkish or Islamic way of life", but everyone I know with this name is Roman Catholic
3)Matronymic, after a female given name
4) Locative, BOSNAR is an example meaning from Bosna
5) Nickname from a physical or personality trait, examples may be SKRTIC from skrt meaning "stingy", one intereting name that Mr. Rimac mentioned at the Archives when I was in Croatia last year is PALIKUCA... which means "arsonist"... I don't know if that would be a nickname or an occupation :)
6) From nature... examples VUKOVIC from vuk meaning wolf, JAVOR meaning maple tree, HREN meaning horseradish
7) from foreign influence... some Bosnijak names are in this category being influence during the time of Turkish rule, and names that came from Germanic areas of Europe and also from Hungary
A couple of primary reasons for the establishment of surnames among common folk was the need of the authorities to keep track of tax collection and military service
I am not sure of your definition of NUHOVIC being from Noah... I hope you are joking about being related to Noah I have seen some people try to tie back to that era and it is at best suspect! I find that there is a middle eastern female given name Nuha, which means wisdom.... the VIC ending means son of... so I would suspect that NUHOVIC may be from that female name... but I am not certain.
