Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia-Hercegovina in 1878 but it was not officially ruled by them until 1908. In 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assasinated in Sarajevo. This essentially caused the outbreak of WW1. When the war ended in 1918, Bosnia-Hercegovina became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (SHS) or what would later be known as Yugoslavia.
