Hello Mike,
There are listings for Joszef and Justine BIRITZ
Justine age 22 married, arr 1911 race of People German.destination Elkhart, Ind. to huband Josef, birthplace Kophaza, Hungary.Joszef's manifest shows him arr about 2 yrs earlier (not uncommon for the husband to immigrate first).Problem is this place is NOT in Hercegovina. The area you mention, to the best of my knowledge did not have a German population)However I believe the place mentioned on this manifest may be in a Croatian area of present day Austria, known as Burgenland. There is quite a bit of genealogical info for that areaon the net. Here is one link which discusses Kophaza and the Croatians there. In 1911 this was a part of Hungary after WW I it became part of Austria.

I don't believe that Justina or Justine is a name which would be found among Bosnians or Croatians. However I would assume that it is German, as indicated on the manifests I found.
So in the case found at Ellis Is. BIRITZ is NOT an Americanized version but the sp. as they came from Europe.
I found no listings for BIRICIC.There are listings for BIRIC many coming from Jaskovo which is in northern Croatia.
