Gordon,

I think I have the same James Borthwick -
James B. Borthwick, b. 21 Jan 1733, Langholm, Dumfries, Scotland, bap. St Cuthberts, Edinburgh, d. 1821 Rensselaerville, Albany Co., NY; m. 11 Nov 1764 Westerkirk, Dumfries, Scotland, Margaret (Peggy) Byres, b. 1740, d.
1824.

One brother - Alexander.

James immigrated to New York with his family ABT 1773; was one of the early settlers (1795) of the Town of Broome, Schoharie Co., NY.

If we have the same James, I have his parents as Alexander Borthwick, b. ABT 1700 St Cuthberts, Edinburgh; m. 29 Jun 1727 Janet Sinclair in St Cuthberts.

Alexander's father was Robert Borthwick, b.
20 Aug 1674 Fala Parish, Midlothian, Scotland
d. ABT 1730. . . And, that's where I'm stuck!

Some of the above data conflicts with that in Bill Borthwick's response to you of 29 April.
Bill's source is the "Borthwick family book".
My source is "The Borthwick Family, A History and Genealogy of the Family of Borthwick" by Halsey M. Borthwick, Boulder, Co., 1903.

If Bill notes my response, I would love to compare notes with him. The above Borthwicks are in direct line of ascent of my spouse, and we've been trying to get past the Robert deadend for years - and years. . .

Hope this helps,

Walker Dix
