Thomas BORTHWICK was born in Scotland in December, 1830. His married Isabella before emigrating to America in 1857, settling in St. Clair Co., IL. It's believed that they lost two sons at an early age. Details on their lives before moving to IL have been very hard to come by. A brother is reported to have accompanied the family to America, but nothing else is known of his life here. Thomas and Isabella left St. Clair Co. during the Civil War and settled in Warren Co., IL with the new last name of RUTHERFORD. They had three more children, Thomas, Isabelle (Nellie), and Walter Scott RUTHERFORD. Nellie died at an early age. Isabella died about 1873, and Thomas remarried in 1876 to Mary O'Brien. Thomas moved to neighboring village of Prairie City in McDonough Co. between 1870 and 1880. The younger Thomas married Rosa (Kate) Shool and moved to Tiburon, CA. I believe they may have had a son named George RUTHERFORD. Walter remained in Prairie City for the balance of his life. He married Grace YOUNG and they had a girl named Isabel Young RUTHERFORD, my grandmother. If anyone can make connections to the BORTHWICK name, either in Scotland, or through the brother of Thomas, please respond. Also, information on any connections to the RUTHERFORD name in California would be appreciated.
