My Bork line arrived in 1841. They initially settled in Buffalo, Erie Co., NY. The marriage and baptismal records from Buffalo Catholic Churches led me to a little town in Hess-Darmstadt called Gau-Bickelheim. There I found over 100 years of church records that had been microfilmed by the Mormon Church. In the old German records, the name was spelled BORCK until the early/mid 1800's.

I also noted that several surrounding towns also had Borks (sometimes the records in Gau-Bickelheim would mention other towns). In my records I don't have a Henry born in 1833 but the name was a common one in the Gau-Bickelheim family.

If your Borks were Catholic, you should try to find old parish records in PA. Many times they told the birthplace of the parents of the child being baptized or married.

At one time, I found a Bork web site in Germany (luckily it was posted in English as well as German). I can't find the address at the moment, but I'll search for it and post it later.

Good luck, Cheryl G. Lehman
