Curg Border Texas Gunslinger

I am a son of Maurene Borders Jones (1921- ). Our family has been in Shelby County, Texas since the mid 1870's. We go back to Michael Borders (174_-1807) according to the Borders book.

There was a family in San Augustine County, Texas about 10 miles from the Borders family homestead in Shelby County by the name of “Border” (no S). We have been ribbed for years that C. Lycurgus (Curg) Border was a relative. Curg was a notorious gunslinger who killed Sheriff George W. Wall on April 21, 1900. Curg Border was elected sheriff and took office in Jan. 1903. He was removed from office on March 3, 1904. On May 7, 1907 Curg was killed by the new Sheriff, Sneed Noble. This is according to the book “Gunsmoke in the Redlands” by Joe F. Combs, The Naylor Co. San Antonio 1968.

According to the book, Curg was the son of George Border, who came to San Augustine with his brothers John P. And Sidney in1841. John P. And George were born in England and Sidney was born in Lockport, N.Y. according to the book.

I don’t see how this outlaw could be related or, at the most, a distant relative. Can you shed any light on this Stephen? By the way, are we cousins?
