SARA BARCLIFT BORDEN Tx Obit
SARA BARCLIFT BORDEN, born November 10, 1920, died October 23, 2001 after a long illness. She was a native of Gadsden, Alabama and a graduate of the Alabama College for Women in Montevallo, Alabama in 1941. Mrs. Borden made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ as her personal savior at age nine during the illness and later death of her mother. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, she joined the United States Navy as a Wave and achieved the rank of Lieutenant. She served in the Navy for 2 1/2 years. She is a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. She and her husband, Bill, were founding members of Bethel Independent Presbyterian Church of Houston. She has been a supporter of underprivileged children through the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Organization, the Boys and Girls Club of Houston. She was a supporter of the Republican Party and a former member of the Republican “Inner Circle” and the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee. Just before the end of WWII, she moved to Houston and met a U.S. Army Captain named William S. Borden. After a short courtship, they were married, the war was ending and they settled in Houston. She was preceded in death by her husband William S. Borden, Sr., a son Robert Barclift Borden, and a daughter Beth Borden Long. She is survived by her son, William S. Borden, Jr. and wife, Nancy, of Bellaire; grandsons, Robert B. Borden, II and Stephen B. Long. She served as a mentor to a number of special younger women in her life including Karen Saucedo, Kristin Smith, Linda Faris, Julie Faris, Bethany Freund, Cindy Walker, Lynn Bousquet, Berta Trulock, Pat McElmurry, May Pat Mayes, Nancy Shell, and Heidi Casino. The family will receive friends and visitors at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons on Thursday, October 25, between 6:00 and 9:00 pm. Services will be on Friday, October 26, at 11:00 am at Bethel Independent Presbyterian Church, 825 Bering Dr., Houston with Dr. Robert A. Tolson officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Don Borden, Brian Borden, Randy Bullard, Robert Bowles, Steve Long and Mike Long will serve as Pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Bethel I.P.C. Building Fund, 825 Bering Drive, Houston, Texas 77057.
