Kevin,
Thanks so much for the quick response. Yes, I do trace my family line back to Thomas. My great great-grandmother was Nettie Boots (born ca. 1855), daughter of Thomas (born ca. 1829) and Maria (born ca. 1830, surname as yet unknown). I've only recently started to research the Boots side of my ancestry, and so far I’ve been able to trace the Boots family back—mostly through census records—through Thomas (b. 1800) and Mary Gunter to Nettie’s great grandparents, Thomas (b. 1779) and Hannah Tree. My next step is to dig into the Sussex parish records in search of the primary documents, but, as I mentioned, I'm still missing a document from the US that would formally connect the family to that area. I'd guess that the baptismal record for Thomas (1800) would mention both parents and thus corroborate the census information, but I'm curious what might have pointed you in the direction of Sussex in particular. Might there be some evidence in the US mentioning a place of origin? I can't imagine what a needle in a haystack your search would've been without that kind of clue. Either way, I'm certainly impressed by the history you've been able to amass, and I'd appreciate any tips you'd be willing to offer. I'd also be glad to share whatever information you might find interesting; feel free to contact me directly at my email address if you'd prefer.
Thanks again,
Chris
