Joseph Boots (NY, IL, Iowa)

I am trying to find the parentage of a Joseph Boots who was born in Cattaraugus County, New York in October 1842; moved with his parents to Sycamore, Illinois; served in the Civil War from DeKalb County, Illinois; and moved to Jones County, Iowa. As there were several Boots families (and still are!) in Jones County, I am trying to determine the relationships between them.

An 1880 Census (Linn County, Iowa) shows Joseph and Mary (Packard) Boots, ages 37 and 28, with 5 children at that time(altogether they had 9 sons and no daughters). It also indicates that Joseph's father and mother were both born in England.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
