The 1776 Frederick Co. MD Militia list has the name Adam Boot. The 1777/1778 Washington Co., MD Militia list has Adam and George Boot. The 1783 Wash. Co. MD tax list has it Adam Boote. The 1785 Hampshire Co. VA list of tithables has it George Boots. Northern Neck Land Grants dated 1788/89/91 have Adam and George Boot. The land tax records for 1786 have Adam Stiffel, 1787 Adam Steefel, 1788 Adam Stephel then from 1789-1795 it is Stiffle. 1796 to 1811 lists both Adam Boot and Adam Stiffel. It could be that the younger generation first adopted Boot. In the Personal Property tax lists I find various spellings of Stiffle up to 1795 and then it becomes Boot and Boots. By 1799 they seem to be spelling it Boots most of the time. From this, I think they were using the Boots surname before they left Virginia. Those church records were written in German originally and there they still used the German version of Boot.
