A whole group of McCloskey's went to the gold fields under the leadership of General then Col Alexander Hays. These McCloskey's by a Pittsburgh newspaper article were related to Cardinal John McCloskey and Bishop Stephen V Ryan the brother of Major James Ryan. Major Ryan was an aide to Union General Alexander Hays of the McKeesport 63rd Red Patch Unit. Their monument is at the Peach Orchart at Gettysburg.

General Hays is buried at Allegheny Cemetery and the McCloskey and Ryan families are buried at St Josephs in Mckeesport.

The McCloskeys by the census records were shoemakers working for Warner Brothers Studios in Pittsburgh. The Warner Brothers made shoes during the week and showed movies on the weekends in Pittsburgh.
