Bret Boone and his brothers are 6th-great-grandsons to Daniel Boone. I have done the research and my research was confirmed by a better genealogist than I, Robert Battle.
The Boone Society Newsletter published a brief piece that I wrote tracing the line from the baseball Boones to Daniel Boone a year or two ago. Their web site is http://www.boonesociety.org and from them you could get the back issue.
But here's the quick and dirty:
Bret's father: Bob (former Royals and Reds manager and former longtime major league catcher).
Bob's father: Ray, grew up in San Diego, went to same high school as Ted Williams but a bit later, and was an infielder for the Indians and Tigers.
Ray's father: Donald Ernest Boone, was born and grew up in Linn County, KS, but spent his career in the construction trade in San Diego.
Don's father: William Shelby Boone, was born in Missouri, was a farmer in Linn County, KS. Also worked as a coal miner.
William's father: Edward Boone (reportedly also known as "Ned"), born in Missouri, moved to Linn County, KS between 1870 and 1880.
Edward's father: Alonzo Havington Boone, born and died in MO.
Alonzo's father: Daniel Morgan Boone, born in North Carolina in 1769 while his father, Daniel Boone the famous explorer and frontiersman, was on one of his long hunts. In the late 1790s, Daniel Morgan Boone scouted land in Missouri, then controlled by Spain, and the Spanish invited the Boones to settle there. Daniel the elder moved to Missouri in response to the invitation by the Spanish, who granted him several thousand acres of land, if I remember John Mack Farragher's biography of Daniel Boone correctly.
If there is an interest shown here in having me document the sources which prove this ancestry, I will try to explain the sources here.
I am a descendant of Daniel's youngest brother, Squire Boone, Jr., named for their father. My Boones moved from Indiana to Iowa before their descendants moved to Idaho, where I was born, and I live in Seattle, so Chuck, I'm not far from your son-in-law in Bremerton.
