(ALSO POSTED ON CORNELISON FORUM)
I just returned from a trip into Missouri. South of Fordland I went into an old cemetery overgrown and in miserable condition. I did see one Ragsdale stone. One other difficult too read double stone is James M. Bookout b. Jan. 3, 1840 d. Feb. 11, 1914 - this would be Annie Bookout's son born out of wedlock (Bookout Bible - grandchildren)(Annie is Susanah Cornelison's sister). The other half of the stone looks like Amanda Bookout possibly born Sept. 1855 (Any Bookouts know this stone?). All others I observed are not readable. If this is the Ragsdale cemetery I keep reading about that Jesse and Susanah are buried in, then this site is a different one from the Ragsdale cemetery I've seen posted on the internet. Absolutely a different graveyard. Nevertheless, with James Bookout here is a good sign. He is almost four years older than William Elvis Bookout (Susanah's son). I doubt many people even know of this cemetery. Trees, brush and heavily shaded. Dark. This cemetery is one that I would guess the state of Missouri does not know about? It is on private farm land at the top of a hill approximately three or four miles down the road from Union Chapel Cemetery off Finley Creek (River). I had two older Cornelison family members tell me this is where Jesse and Susanah are buried but neither (the family) had been there in years. They both said there was a Cornelison stone there, but I could not find it. Possibly fell flat and covered with several years worth of leaves. There are several graves with broken stones in an area that is approximately 25 X 25 feet. If someone does not have who is buried in there written down, then they are lost forever. I have no idea why the state of Missouri does not do something about these old cemeteries... these old cemeteries are the history of Missouri. Wish I could have had better news. Jesse and Susanah Cornelison are my gg-grandparents. Garrett's (Jesse's dad) stone at Walnut Shade Cemetery just north of Branson is in pretty bad shape also (144 years old?). The children's stones are breaking up and fading. In Seligman, two miles north of the Arkansas border and approximately 50 miles west of Branson, I went to Jesse E. Cornelison and Mary Roberts' grave. Their new stone is only about thirty years old and in good shape. The site is approximately 30 X 30 feet square surrounded by barbed wire, gateless, with small trees and fairly thick brush that you have to mash down to get a look. Could easily be cleaned up, but is not. No other stones are readable. Broken and laying in disarray. Nine people are buried there. Jesse E., Mary, two children, two slaves, a man and wife unknown and a Mr. Hale (sp?) who was shot (murdered) on the Cornelison land while riding across it and they buried him there. The house that was only about 150 yards or so away from this graveyard in the middle of a field is long gone (beautiful piece of land, nice farm – owner, Don Raucstadt, is a very nice, helpful, gentleman). On the property (460 acres, I believe), over the hill and through the woods, Don said are two caves that the slaves lived in, but it was so overgrown there was no reason to go down there. Jesse E. and Mary had four slaves valued at $2000 in 1861 or 1862 (Goodspeed's History of Southwest Missouri - 1888).
