Jan, William E's parents were John Bookout and Zilpha (Wright) Bookout, to the best of our knowledge. This is based upon John's division of land in Randolph Co., NC in 1828. Different documents list part of the children and other documents list some different children, which makes it confusing. Margaret is in one document but in another it appears that there was a sister named Peggy, or else Margaret and Peggy were the same person. Did Margaret live to the 1880 census so it showed the birthplace of her parents? Can you tell me the names of the children you believe were Margaret's? Sometimes the children will be named after the father or brothers. Here are the land records in abstract that mention Margaret:
State of North Carolina ) Court of Pleas &
)
Randolph County ) Quartersessions Feb Term 1840

To the Justices of the said Court.

The petition of Margaret Carter represents to your worships that John Bookout late of the County of Randolph, died _____ &_____ of two tracts of land lying in said County situate on the west side of Deep River bounded on the North by Riley & Gardner & John Hally lands on the west of Jacob Craven's on the South by W.[?] Craven & Marsh Gwinett[?] & on the East by Nathan Cox. That the said Bookout left surviving him ten children his heirs at-law, to wit Bradly, Joice, Eleanor, Wright, John, Zilpha, Mary, Margaret, William & Charles Bookout. Your petitioner represents further that the shares of the first-six children mentioned
above were purchased by your petitioner's father James Carter & by subsequent emergencies[?] have since become the property of your petitioner which she is ready to shew when required so to do. That by virtue of said interest she has become a tenant in common in the aforesaid law with Mary, Margaret, William & Charles Bookout [sic, space] now residing in the States of Indiana & Georgia & of Bradly Joice, Eleanor, Wright, John & Zilpha Bookout Your petitioner further prays this Court to appoint five commissioners to devide & appropriate the said land amoung your pertitioner & her co-tenants & to do all other things necessary & proper according to law. Your petitioner further represents that two of her co-tenants to wit Margaret & Charles Bookout are minors & that they & Mary & William are not residents of the State of North Carolina. Your petitioner further prays that the Clerk of this Court Hugh Wleain[?] be appointed Guardian ad btem[?] to the said Minors Margaret & Charles Bookout & that publication be made made in the Southern Certyne[?] four [sic, space] weeks informing them so defendants[?] of this petition &c & to make all further & necessary orders as the case may be & as in duty bound your petitioner will ever pray &c.
Enoch[?] McH______[?]
for petitioner Margaret Carter

It says Margaret and Charles were minors. [Incidentally, Charles [b. abt 1827] lived in Center Twp., Sebastian Co., AR 1860-1880.] Interesting, huh. Anyway, if Margaret was born 1815-1816, she would have been 13-14 when John died, making her a minor, which also agrees with the document.

John Bookout and Zilpha (Wright) had 13 or 14 children, depending on whether Peggy and Margaret are the same or not. If you want this info, just let me know.
