I am not related to or researching this man, just entering information from the booklet "Trails to Hoosier Heritage" by Harry G. Black, 1981.
"Edward William Bonney and his young wife arrived in Elkhart County in the early 1830s. Bonney entertained ideas of founding his own community which he planned to name after himself. His first move in this direction was to purchase an 80 acre tract of land along the Little Elkhard River. Knowing that his settlement would need some type of industry to draw people Bonney constructed a saw and grist mill (pictured). Bonney named his settlement Bonneyville."
"Approximately 10 homes were built in the vicinity of the grist mill. Bonney anticipated rapid fgrowth of his community when the railroad reached the settlement. As in so many other cases, the railroad saw fit to bypass the village. Bonneyville, as a town, was on a collision course with obscurity."
"In 1842 Edward William Bonney was arrested for counterfeiting money. He managed to escape justice by breaking out of jail. The next few years of his life were spent as an outcase along the Mississippi River Valley. Bonney had a chance to redeem himself during the American Civil War. The Federal Government pardoned Bnney for his crime when he joined the Union Army. Bonney died in 1865 and was buried in the Boneyville Cemetery."
