Linda Glendale King writes that "my grandmother states that we are ancesters of James Butler Bonham." Even assuming that she means "descendants," this is impossible -- James Butler Bonham died without issue -- but many folks mistakenly claim to be descended from perhaps this most famous of American Bonhams. The closest relationship that anyone can accurately claim to James Butler Bonham is to be descended from one of his five full siblings (i.e., the other children of James Bonham & Sophia Butler Smith) that reached adulthood. They are: (1) Sarah (1799-1839), m Col. J.N. Lipscombe. They had only one child -- a daughter named Sarah (1823-1867). (2) Simeon (1802-1835), m Elizabeth Amanda Wardlaw; settled in Alabama. 4 children, of which there was one son (James Ward, who died at age 6). (3) Malachi Mark Bonham (1804-1861), m Martha Ford. Ancestor of most of the Texas / Louisiana Bonham lines. (I'm one of his many descendants, through his son Milledge Luke (1841-1904), his son Joseph (1876-1962), his son Joe Bradley (1911-1995), and his son Joe Burleson (1934- ). (4) Julia Ann Rachael (1811-?), m. Dr. S.W. Bowie. Two daughters. (5) Milledge Luke (1813-1890), m. Ann Patience Griffin. Colonel in the Mexican American War, member of the C.S.A. Congress, Brig. General in the CSA, Governor of South Carolina (1862-64). 14 children, of which there were only three sons who left issue (Milledge Lipscombe [1854-1942), William Butler [1866-1903], Frank Pickens [1873-1915]).
