Patricia,

Thank you for clarifying that you think Samuel Bonham of New Hanover Co., NCīs date of birth was likely a guess. I think so too as I have found no record of when he was b.. As to Samuel Bonham of Westmoreland Co., VA, none match Samuel of New Hanover. The one claimed/thought to have been Samuel of New Hanover, was too young to have acquired property in New Hanover in 1735 (he, Samuel of Westmoreland VA, was under guardianship at the time). Besides that Samuel of Westmoreland VA, died in VA (left a will that proves that). As to Ephraim Bonham, it is my best guess that he was the son of Samuel of New Hanover by a first marriage (and if he is Samuel of Hezekiah Bonhamīs first marriage to Mary Dunn, his wife was Catherine Anderson). As to the "Carter" children, Hezekiah Bonham, and I think John also, were listed on New Hanover tax rolls as "Bonhamīs" a number of years before Samuel died. As to Thomasina (Tomlinson) Carter, she had property in her own right (Carterīs Delight in MD) and she came from a long European, Colonial, lineage. I see no evidence of Indian or other blood and think it is just one of those family myths. Perhaps she chose to keep her property seperate from Samuelīs, including "her" childrenīs property as to her own holdings, so as said Ephraim could not lay a claim on her property or so Samuel could not skip town or whatever with her property. Besides that, as to surname, the Y-DNA of a descendant of Samuel Bonham of New Hanover, via his son Hezekiah (and I donīt think there are any descendants of the other sons as John died young and have not found evidence of Nicholas), matches our other "-iah" Bonhamīs Y-DNA so closely that it is likely that they are of the same family, though we have yet to find the paper trail. As said, I think Samuel of New Hanover, may be the "lost" Samuel Bonham of Hezekiah Bonhamīs 1st marriage. He would fit age wise and I have not found any other "Samuel Bonhams" who WOULD fit. If he is NOT that Samuel, we would be looking for a seperate immigrant who was related to the family, back in the British Isles, but the naming practices also seem indicative, that Samuel of New Hanover is related to the NJ Bonhams (i.e. Ephraim, Hezekiah and Nicholas among Samuel of New Hanoverīs family, John likely being named for Tomasinaīs father).

The above is a distillation of what I have gathered

Do you know of anyone who has a copy of Hezekiah Bonham of New Hanoverīs will?
