Okay all of you fellow Bonham researchers of Nicholas and Hezekiah Bonham, etc.. ! Listen up! And, any descendants of the New Hanover CO, NC Bonham line, please give your input as to the following: I think that Samuel Bonham who received a land grant on the Cape Fear River in New Hanover Co. NC in 1735, may have been a direct descendant of Hezekiah Bonham + Mary Dunn (i.e. NOT an -iah Bonham, but a descendant of the only proven marriage of Hezekiah Bonham son of Nicholas Bonham). I will provide a long documentation as to why I think that, to anyone who requests it. The short story is that said Samuel Bonham, must have been b. at the latest in ca. 1715 to have filed for the land grant. The Will of a Samuel Bonham of New Hanover Co. NC (d. 1771) mentioned among others, a Hezekiah and a Nicholas (note- I have not seen the will itself, am quoting an abstract from NC State Archives). Hezekiah Bonham, (only documented surviving son) of Nicholas Bonham and Hannah Fuller, had only ONE documented son, i.e. Samuel Bonham, by Hezekiah´s marriage to Mary Dunn and that was Samuel Bonham, b. ca. 1693 in Piscataway, NJ. It is not known exactly what happened to Samuel. He is said to have "disappeared", to have gone back to England and to have never come back to the Colonies, to have come back and to have md. Catherine Anderson and to have had children with her, the first being a Rachel, b. 1720. Seems likely to me that, in that Samuel Bonham was also said to have been a merchant (which gave rise to the stories that he either disappeared at sea, or never came back to the Colonies), that he was going back and forth between the Colonies and England. In attempts to trace the VA roots of the New Hanover NC Bonhams, none of the Bonham families seem to fit that of Samuel Bonham of New Hanover, NC. There is said to have been a Samuel Bonham who received a land patent in VA as early as 1633, but the "precise location" is said to be "not known" so it seems unsure as to the documentation of that Samuel. And otherwise, the "VA" Bonhams do not seem to directly connnect to the NJ Bonhams. The land deal, sometimes cited as showing Samuel Bonham (who d. New Hanover CO NC 1771) to be of a VA Bonham line, was a land deal involving his marriage to a Thomasine, Tamlinson Carter (and other variations of her name). That was land that SHE (Tamlinson/Thomasine) inherited from her grandfather, Edward Carter and the land was in Baltimore MD. I DO recognize that changing borders as to states, counties and land cause difficulties but I do think that in this case, that the land deal certainly, does not prove any VA connection as to Samuel. Considering "all" available Samuel Bonhams or other Bonhams in this time frame, I think it entirely possible that the New Hanover CO, NC Bonhams are possibly "the real thing" as to descendancy from Hezekiah Bonham + Mary Dunn. Would very much like to hear from anyone as to what you think and as said, will send you a 10 page document as to my reasoning - e-mail: linda.peacock@dadlnet.dk.
