Our family name was originally Bohnenstiel, to Bonesteel, to Bonisteel - Bonstelle - Bonsteel.
We have at least 5 different variations in the same family and it all started with BOHNENSTIEL.
When my Gr-Gr-Gr-Gr-Gr Grandparents first came to this County, on the very first Census they appear as Jacobus Bohnenstiel and Christian Welch.
The next Census on the very same property they appear as
Jacob Bonesteel & Christian Welch.
It was my Grandparents way of letting us know that the original name was something else other than Bonesteel.
We were taught in school that at the time the Census was taken, people who were new to this Country were encouraged to put their original name on the first Census so the family had a way of tracing them.
Don't forget that it depended on the person writing the information on the Census record and how he perceived the name to sound. How it sounded and how it was were not always the same.
Good Luck
