Closing Program ~ Chariton Schools ~ Willa O. Bond ~ Lucas County, Iowa
The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, May 28, 1908
The school vacation has now come. The closing days were busy ones, owing to
preparation for commencement -- and anxious ones generally among the grades
to know what standings would be and whether or not individual promotions
would be secured.
In the High School a class of twenty-nine had finished the course of study
and prescribed by the board of directors and received their diplomas. They
were ANNA DENEEN, CARL T. BOWEN, GERTRUDE M. LYONS, MARY K. LOCKWOOD, BLANCHE N. COTTINGHAM, LOLA M. SCHRUM, HENRY F. MCCOLLOUGH, GLADYS M. NOLAN, EDWIN E. BEEM, BEULAH SELLERS, MARIE L. BOWN, FRANK N. WHISENAND, MABEL L. STAFFORD, GEORGELLA BEVAN, ALBERT H. REED, BESS G. FARLEY, LESTER S. COMBS, WILLA O. BOND, MABEL B. GITTINGER, EMORY N. BOWMAN, CHAS. A. ROW, IOWA A. ENSLEY, HATTIE PRESS, AUDREY C. COWAN, NINA E. LUTZ, OMA F. SNEDAKER, CLARA V. SHAFFER, HELEN P. MCGAUGHEY, CLIFFORD C. HAKES.
MISS CLARA SHAFFER was valedictorian of the class and there were several
poets and prophets.
The program was rendered practically as printed in the Leader a short time
since, which, owing to its length was divided into two parts, Thursday and
Friday nights. The orations were good, showing study and fine training, and
all class parts were of a high order. Prof. C.J. Johnson and those who had
the education of this class under their care, are surely to be congratulated
on the good work done. It was a good class of young ladies and gentlemen,
who will add to knowledge here gained, experience, the great requisite of
success.
The Chariton Orchestra furnished splendid music both evenings.
