Long Island and New Jersey history books say that Robert Bond and John (“the Pilgrim”)
Ogden married each other’s sisters. Many details about the Ogden family of Bradley
Plain, Hampshire, Englandare available in early NJ genealogy books, and the Bonds
receive a passing mention.
Robert Bond b. about 1610, d. by April, 1677
and
Jane Bond b. about 1616, d. after 1677
were apparently children of Jonathan Bond and Margaret Crane of Bradley Plain. There’s
another Margaret Crane in John Ogden’s ancestry. This might be the same Crane family
with which the Bonds and Ogdens later intermarried in America, but I don’t know for
sure.
Long Island history books tell about Robert Bond’s career in Easthampton where he was a
blacksmith and justice of the peace. He and John Ogden moved to NJ in 1665 to help
found Elizabeth Town, but I think the land on which Robert Bond settled was later
assigned to Newark. In 1672 Ribert Bond married Mary Calkins, widow of Hugh Roberts
of Conn. and daughter of Hugh Calkins (1600-1690) of Conn. whom Robert Bond
probably met when he represented Easthampton on the Conn. Assembly.Robert died
intestate by April 20, 1677.
His issue (maybe not in order):
Jane b. about 1641 Lynn, Mass
Robert jr.d. by 1668 at Easthampton
Mary b. 1642 Lynn, Mass., m. Thomas Osborne b. 1622
Stephen b. about 1644Long Islandm. Bethiah Laurence
Joseph b. about 1646d. about 1707,to NJ 1665/6
Rebecca b. about 1649
The weak part in this history is that some of the lists of John Ogden’s siblings fail to list
his supposed youngest sister Hannah b. about 1613, and the evidence that Jane Bond had
a brother Robert seems based on hearsay. Can anyone produce more solid evidence of
this connection?
