A Bolton mistake
A BOLTON MISTAKE
Many Bolton genealogy researchers have stated that the Matthew Bolton, b. 9 JUN 1762 in Henry Co., VA,d. 4 SEP 1824 in Columbia Co., GAmarried Mary Perryman in VA. There was a Matthew Bolton in VA who married a Mary Perryman but where is the proof that they are the same man. We know that there were several Matthew Boltons in VA at that time.
Simple logic says otherwise:
1. Two different publications of GA Rev. War veterans state that his wife was Mary Chapman. Not Perryman.
2. Following English traditional naming patterns they named their second son Thomas Chapman Bolton (my line) and their second daughter Mary Chapman Bolton, who were named for Mary’s parents.
3. They did name their last son Elisha Perryman Bolton so there is a relationship to the Perryman somehow. Usually later sons were named for a favorite uncle or the like.
There is another point that I believe is wrong but have no proof. Some researchers have linked Matthew to a New York Rev War service record. There were many Boltons in New England that served. My guess is that my ancestor served in a VA outfit. I am curious about how old my Matthew was when he went into the Army since he was 13 when the war started and 21 when it ended.
