I believe for the most part the Bolton's came from England as the "ton" in Bolton came from a Saxton word "tun" that means town. There are several spelling of Bolton {Boulton,Bolten, to name a few}.I heard that during the Rev. war some Boulton's dropped the "u" in protest of the British.
