I walked that cemetery from end to end, because I was looking for Joseph Bolton, Matthew's son, and his wife Priscilla.I am convinced they are there, but they had no markers.Joseph was a schoolteacher and of meager means. He died sometime between 1860 and 1869.Priscilla was alive in 1870.A member of the church, Mr. Harold Medlock, gave me a precious listing his ancestor made in 1872 or so of the members of the church that is handwritten.Priscilla and of course other Boltons are listed on it.I'll bet you would love to have that, and if you will email me privately and remind me this weekend, I will scan it and send it to you! The history room - on the wall is a xerox copy of young women of the church in the 1870's.I am convinced my grandmother's mother, Eliza B. Strickland, grand-daughter of Joseph Bolton, is in that photo, but no one knows who had the original photo or information about who appears in it!
I recall an obelisk monument of some kind to Matthew in that cemetery.Up front is a large monument - that is not it - that one was erected by a family whose ancestors who are buried there were not members of the church.Mr. Medlock told me the church gave permission through the years for all kinds of folks in the community to be buried there.
On Father's Day, 2003, I attended church there.I met one of the oldest member Boltons still living and his grandchildren.I am so grateful I attended!I was busy looking at their features, until Mr. Medlock told me they all looked this Mr. Bolton's mother, not the Boltons!
A few of the Boltons are buried over at the Norcross City Cemetery. If you will call the City of Norcross Town Hall, they can tell you how to get there.David, son of Joseph Bolton, is buried there. Also, one of his brothers and his wife and a baby child.
If you will call the Mt. Carmel Church office, they perhaps can put you in touch with Mr. Medlock. The last time we talked, he was having a terrible time hearing me, and his health was poor.I finally wrote him a letter, but it was returned to me.He is a dear person and a fine historian. Please let me know if you are able to reach him.His roots are VERY deep and old in the community of Pinckneyville.
