I have a photo of John Mason Bolt born June 9th 1860, died Dec 25, 1917. He was the grandson of Mean John Bolt and Rebecca Dillard. He married Cordelia Ellen Sowers. John was a very mean man, according to his grandchildren. He was supposedly shot in the back by a deputy sheriff named, Jim Harris. John's wife tried to get him to stay at home instead of going to a Christmas Eve Service at their church. He went anyway. When they got to church he let his family out of their wagon at the front of the church and he went around to the back of the church to unhitch the horses. Jim Harris and some of the Conner boys were arguing behind the church building. It is felt that the deputy thought that John came to take up for the Conner boys. A scuffle broke out and ended with John being mortally wounded. He died the next day.
Another relative of Jim Harris claims that she heard that when John got to the church that he was drunk. He had heard that Jim Harris said that he was going to get the Conner boys and he decided that he was going to defend them. She said that when he got around behind the church building that he pulled a knife on the deputy and the scuffle ended with John being shot. Jim Harris said that it was self-defense and was never charged with any crime. I guess that we will never know. My grandmother, a small girl at the time, (daughter of John Bolt) says that she remembers someone coming into the church to tell them that her father was dead.
