Saw your post on Walter Cocke.
I have some infornation that has his name in it don't know
if we are connected aor not but thought what I was sent the
Christopher is my ggggggggrandfather, here is the item that
was sent to me might help you.
Don't know where it can out of sent to me by a person who is
doing research on the Whitehurst-Whitis family .
copying as is.
b.1571;d.1651 and Charles (4) b. 1575. John Cock (3) was
buried at Lanteglos, Dec 19 1604. His Wife died in 1597.
Christopher Cock (4) was mayor of Camelford from 1604 to
1635. For ninety years through three generations, father,
son, and grandson, this family held that office.
Christopher Cock of Helston married Grace Bolitho of
Wenddron, October 27 1673. (Vivian's Visitations of the
County Devon, England, page 846) Helston is in the far
south-western part of Cornwall, near the sea and
north-eastward from Lizard Head. Devon is northeast of
Cornwall.
About 1685 this Christopher Cocke cane to Virginia with his
brothers William,Walter, and Captain Thomas Cocke. That they
were brothers is proved by the will of his son, Christopher
Cocke dated the fifth day of Nov. 1716, and probated in
Princess Anne County the fifth day of December 1716. It
reads.."Item I commit the Tuition and bringing up of my
three daugthers Mary, Ann, and Argent (My Line) unto my
loving uncle and aunt Bolitho and the survivor of them until
they attain to the prospective ages of sixteen years un-less
they e marryed before that age...." This Uncle Bolitho must
be the brother of his mother Grace Bolitho. That he was a
young man is shown by the fact that all four of his children
were under the age of sixteen years. His wife, who is not
mentioned , was dead.
His uncle , Mr. William Cocke, must have been the brother of
his father,Christopher, in his will he writes, "Item: I
commit the care and tuition of my Daughr; Eliza. unto my
loving uncle Mr. William Cocke until she is marryed or shall
attain the age of sixteen years (with) the same limitation
and restrictions......as my above n'd three daugthers."
(Princess Anne County Deed Book 1714-1724 p.342.)
Thus William Cocke, brother of Walter and Captian thomas
Cocke, was also brother of Christopher Cocke, and not a
cousin, as has been printed. In the old records the word
"cousin" nearly always meant "nephew" or "niece".
Undoubtedly soneone, seeing the word "Cousin", interpreted
it in teh modern sense, and obscured the relationship of the
four brothers.
November 14 1684. Tho. Cocke witnessed the will of Richard
King, of Lower Norfolk Co., and was one of the witnesses by
whom it was proved in court June 1686. (Norfolk Co DB4,
p.229)
September 28 1685, Richard Hill's will ......In primes: I
give and bequeath to Mr. Lemuel Mason Jun'r my new sute of
cloueths and new castor (beaver) hat now at Mr. Thomas
Cockes.
Probated July 17 1686 (Idem p.236)
February 26, 1686/7 Thomas Cock witnessed the will of Henry
Spratt. (Norfolk Co book 5, p. 12)
Henry spratt Will Lower Norfolk Co wills. 105 book 5 F. 12
are we connected to the same line . If you have anymore
information please sent to me.
