Bolitho family of Wendon, Constantine, Mylor and LONDON.

Dear Anthony Rackstraw,

I have just come across your request for information re above, especially the four BOLITHOS who went up to London from St. Mawes, where they lived. [Christened at St. Just in Roseland - because at that time St. Mawes did not have its own church, so you took the boat from St. Mawes to St Just in Roseland, to marry, have your babies christened etc. [My sister, Josephine, and I did this walk one hot summer's day a few years ago].
We are the descendants of WILLIAM BOLITHO - c. St Just 1794. He and his two brothers, JAMES and FRANCIS, all married at St. Pancras Old Church in London in the 1820s. We do not know when exactly they came to London, nor why.
JANE AUGUSTINE BOLITHO was WILLIAM's daughter - he did in fact have more children, AGNES, CATHERINE, JOSEPH and WILLIAM. They were all in St. Pancras Workhouse on the 1841 census with their mother AGNES [BARRATT] BOLITHO. We do not know what happens to her, nor where she came from.
WILLIAM BOLITHO re-marries JANE in the 1850s and he dies in 1873 in Kensington, London
JANE AUGUSTINE BOLITHO married our great grandfather, HENRY BISHOP [whom has proved very difficult to find out much more about. On two censuses he says he was born in BRISTOL, and another two GREAT TORRINGTON in DEVON. We know his father was JAMES BISHOP, Cabinet Maker, from his marriage to Jane, but that is all. HENRY BISHOP had been a copper miner in Devon and Cornwall, but obviously came up to London when the bottom fell out of the market in the mid-1800s. Very strangely they married in LAMERTON, DEVON in 1859, and then came back to London.
They had in fact five children, AGNES, JAMES BOLITHO, [not John, which the census says erroneously], HENRY WILLIAM,
EDMUND, and JANE. [Birth dates from 1861 to 1870].
EDMUND BISHOP married MARIA OGSTON from the wilds of Aberdeenshire in London and had EDMUND, DOROTHY, KATHLEEN, SIDNEY, ALAN, ROY, AND DENNIS BISHOP. OLIVE and LLOYD died young, and it is thought she miscarried twins.
I am descended from ROY OGSTON BISHOP and have an elder sister Sally, b. 1936 and a twin sister, Josephone b. 1940.
WILLIAM BOLITHO's sister, MARY ANN BOLITHO, was the key to us finding out where WILLIAM BOLITHO actually came from. We always knew it was Cornwall, but not where exactly. On the 1881 census she popped up living with JANE AUGUSTINE [BOLITHO] BISHOP and her husband, HENRY BISHOP. On an earlier census she had lived with JANE's sister AGNES. When she came to London, we do not know. MARY ANN BOLITHO died, living in JANE's house in Chiswick, London in 1887.
The person who notified the death was given as J. Bishop [niece]. That last one little word meant so much. We knew she was born in ST. MAWES, and so tracked the rest of the family there on the I.G.I. - the only BOLITHOS living there.

My Dad's family, the BISHOPS, were all good games players, as were my sisters and I. SID BISHOP in fact played football for England. Where did this gene come from? The BISHOPS or the BOLITHOS, or somewhere else?

I look forward to hearing from you.

With very best wishes,

MARION SOLDAN [nee BISHOP]. 1st June, 2005.
