Thanks for the information on Benj. Elliot. He is a major problem, isn't he? One problem is that rather random way of spelling names by the census takers in those early rolls.

My wife was a Roberts whose mother was a Boling (dau of James Hamilton Boling). One of the stories I had to listen to after dinner while dessert was being prepared was a discussion of how there was a 'falling out' among three brothers in Laurens County in the 1780-1790 period. As a result one brother dropped an 'L' from the name and moved on upstate, a second went to Tennessee, and the third (I presume Samuel) stayed in Laurens County. We've all used Samuel's bible to identify his brothers and sisters. A question that has been in my mind since I started working on this genealogy business is whether the falling out could have been bad enough that Samuel used that method to erase Elliot from the family, so to speak. I sure would like to find a will of Samuel's father to see how many children he mentions. I also wish I had taken notes and pushed the memory of those telling those family tales. I felt as though I should keep quiet since I had married into the family.
It is a fun game though, isn't it.
Charles
