I have never been asked the question before, so I haven't looked into it yet.

Bollinger appears from Switzerland, which was part of the Prussian, Austrian, and German Empires from one time to another.

I suspect that it is most likely that Bollinger would be the line to follow.

It may be that the Germany of the time included more than just Germany proper today.

You might try honing in on the history of Germany at the time of your ancestors' arrival.
