Regarding "John Fugate Bolin who was hung in the Civil War," that "Fugate Bolin" interests me. I am working some folks who have both BOLINs and FUGATEs.
Joshua REDWINE b. bef 1790, d. 1859 VA, m. as 1st wife Mary E. BOLIN. Their son's son Elisha McNew REDWINE b. 1850, m. 1870 as a 2nd wife, Susan Ellender FUGATE b. 1849 Scott Co., VA.

Does anyone else find BOLIN and FUGATE connections? It would seem likely that "John Fugate Bolin" was from some such connection.
