Frank Bolger, 78, actor, director, teacher and activist, died on June 5, 2006. Born a twin in Oak Park, IL, Mr. Bolger attended Loyola University of Chicago and the studied acting extensively with Lee Strasburg and Robert Lewis at the American Theater Wing. Mr. Bolger began his acting career on stage in Chicago followed by roles on television and in the films The Eddie Duchin Story and A Face in the Crowd. He then moved to New York appearing in plays for the New Dramatist Committee before landing the role of Lachlan in The Hasty Heart on Broadway to great critical acclaim. In 1951, Mr. Bolger moved to Los Angeles where he founded the Group Theater West and served as Associate Professor of Advanced Acting and the Pasadena Playhouse. Mr. Bolger became a leading AIDS activist in Los Angeles in the 1980's and 90's founding and volunteering at many support and advocacy organizations for people living with AIDS including Being Alive and VALUES, Veterans with AIDS for Love, Understanding and Support. In 1993, he was awarded the City of West Hollywood Mayor's Award and the Nancy Cole Sawaya Humanitarian Award from AIDS Project Los Angeles for his extensive AIDS activist work in the community. Following his return to New York in the mid-1990's, Mr. Bolger remained an active volunteer, founding the Frank Bolger Playbill Project to raise money for the Actors' Fund of America. Mr. Bolger is survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as many good friends, colleagues and students. A burial service will be held at the All Saints Catholic Cemetery in Des Plaines, IL at 1 p.m. in June 24 followed by a memorial service at the St. Malachy's Actor's Chapel in New Yourk in July. Donations may be made in memory of Mr. Bolger's to the Actor's Fund of America.
